MCADORY NAMED DIRECTOR OF ADMISSIONS

Alice McAdory was appointed as director of admissions after serving as acting director for one year.

Since fall 2000, McAdory has implemented several customer-service initiatives and expanded the admissions outreach efforts in a number of ways by involving more faculty, staff, alumni and current undergraduates in the student recruitment process.

In February, she coordinated the university's second Scholarship Competition, which brought more than 350 high school students - with a minimum 3.3 grade point average and 1180 SAT scores - to the campus.

"Thanks to her efforts and those of many others on campus, more than 70 percent of these talented students have enrolled at Old Dominion this year," said John R. Broderick, vice president for institutional advancement, who announced McAdory's appointment. "Overall freshman class enrollments are up more than 6 percent, and transfer enrollments are up more than 4 percent."

Broderick, who oversees the areas of admissions, alumni relations, government relations, publications, university relations and university events, also noted, "Alice was selected following a search that yielded a pool of highly qualified candidates, and a rigorous interview process. I am confident that she will continue the good work she began over the past year as acting director."

McAdory joined Old Dominion in 1991 as the associate director of distance learning/military programs and later served as director of the university's Peninsula Center from 1997 to 2000. While operating the Peninsula Center, she also worked as a special assistant to the provost to establish Old Dominion's Northern Virginia Center in Loudoun County.

McAdory earned her undergraduate degree in German from the University of Maryland and her master's in clinical psychology and counseling from Valdosta State University. She is currently enrolled in the doctoral program in educational policy and leadership at the College of William and Mary.
