HOMECOMING & INAUGURAL EVENTS BEGIN TODAY

Concerts, receptions and an academic symposium are just some of the weeklong slate of activities marking the inauguration of Old Dominion University's seventh president, Roseann Runte.

Under the theme "Portal to New Worlds," Runte will be officially inaugurated at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, on Kaufman Mall. More than 800 guests are expected to attend the ceremony, which will include an academic procession, remarks by distinguished guests and the conferring of honorary degrees. Former Old Dominion presidents Alfred B. Rollins Jr. and James L. Bugg Jr. will present Runte with the university medal. The inauguration ceremony will be followed by an informal reception.

Honorary degrees will be awarded to internationally known jazz vocalist Jon Hendricks; author, psychoanalyst and professor of linguistics at the University of Paris Julia Kristeva; NASA astronaut and 1993 Old Dominion alumnus Lt. Col. Michael J. Bloomfield; and Broadwing Inc. president and 1975 alumnus Richard G. Ellenberger.

Inauguration festivities will begin Tuesday, Oct. 9, and run through Saturday, Oct. 13. Events include:

12:30-2 p.m. Pride Day � A Celebration of Monarch Spirit; Kaufman Mall
1:30 p.m. Student Reception with President Runte (invitation only); Webb University Center

Wednesday, Oct. 10
8 p.m. Pre-Inaugural Concert featuring jazz vocalist Jon Hendricks accompanied by the John Toomey Trio
Free and open to the public
Chandler Recital Hall, Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center


Thursday, Oct. 11
11 a.m. Inauguration Ceremony; Kaufman Mall
12:30 p.m. Inauguration Reception; Kaufman Mall
