THREE TEAMS OPEN THEIR SEASONS THIS WEEKEND
Three Old Dominion teams will open up their 2001 season this weekend with men's and women's soccer kicking off against UNC-Greensboro, and women's cross country racing against Norfolk State at Mt. Trashmore in Virginia Beach. Additionally the field hockey team will host its home opener against perennial powerhouse Maryland at Foreman Field on Saturday.
Women's soccer, led by CAA Co-Player of the Year Jen Henley (Chalfont, Pa.) and All-CAA selections Andi Rowe (Fairfax, Va.) and Melanie McGovern (Somerdale, N.J.), kicks off Friday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. The Lady Monarchs return to Norfolk Sunday to host their home opener against Radford with kick-off slated for 1 p.m. The Lady Monarchs hold a 2-0 edge over UNC-Greensboro and are 3-0 against the Highlanders.
The Monarch men's soccer team will also open their season against the Spartans with kick-off scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. Led by CAA Rookie of the Year Attila Vendegh (Bratislava, Slovakia) and All-CAA picks Anders Haugom (Gjovik, Norway) and Adam Colborne (Greensboro, N.C.), the Monarchs will look to avenge last year's 0-3 season opening loss and pick-up their first victory over UNC-Greensboro in series history.
The women's cross-country team sprints into action against local rival Norfolk State on Saturday, Sept. 1 at 10 a.m. Senior captain Hollie Robinson (Virginia Beach) will guide a youthful team that boasts six new faces on the roster.
The Lady Monarch field hockey team will look to snap a two-game losing streak on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the 2001 home opener against the Terrapins. Old Dominion, which captured the 2000 NCAA title, dropped its first two games of the 2001 season with a 2-3 overtime loss to Michigan State in the season opener and a 0-1 defeat to #4 Michigan.
Junior midfielders Tiffany Snow (Escondido, Calif.) and Tara Herrmann (Pekasia, Pa.) currently top the stat sheet with two points apiece, while fellow midfielder Melissa Leonetti (Erdenheim, Pa.) has tallied one point so far in the 2001 season.
The Terps, ranked second by HockeyPoint! as of Aug. 27, are riding a three-game winning streak following its season opening road swing to California. Maryland defeated California and Pacific by the score of 8-0, while the Terps held off the Stanford Cardinal, 3-0.
The Terps were the only blemish on last year's schedule as then #1 Maryland gave the Lady Monarchs a 4-5 loss in double overtime in College Park, Md. Old Dominion rebounded later in the season avenging the loss with a 2-1 win on Foreman Field.
