PRESIDENT'S LECTURE SERIES KICKS OFF SEPT. 20

Old Dominion University's Fall 2001 President's Lecture Series will include presentations by Wesley K. Clark, former NATO Supreme Allied Commander of Europe and three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Edward Albee.

All lectures begin at 8 p.m. and are free and open to the public. Seating is first-come, first-served.

The season kicks off Sept. 20 with Clark, a retired four-star general with leadership experience in Vietnam, Latin America and Kosovo, delivering "Waging Modern War" at 8 p.m. in the Mills Godwin Jr. Life Sciences Bldg. auditorium.

Other speakers include:

Oct. 4 � Edward Albee, acclaimed playwright and recipient of the 1996 National Medal of the Arts, "The Playwright vs. the Theatre," 8 p.m. North and South Cafeterias of Webb University Center. Albee's most recognized work is "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"

Oct. 18 � John Stilgoe, professor of history of landscape in the Harvard University School of Visual and Environmental Studies, "How the Images Arrived: Circa 1890 Advertising and Contemporary Liberal Arts Education," Mills Godwin Jr. Life Sciences Bldg. auditorium. His recent research has looked at the transformation of rural and small-town life after 1890.

Nov. 15 � Michael Berube, Paterno Family Professor of English at Pennsylvania State University, "Disability and Democracy," Mills Godwin Jr. Life Sciences Bldg. auditorium. Berube is hailed as one of the nation's "public intellectuals" by The New York Times and The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Nov. 29 � Sylvia Earle, world-renowned oceanographer, "Sustainable Seas: The Vision, the Reality," Mills Godwin Jr. Life Sciences Bldg. auditorium. Earle is the founder and chair of Deep Ocean Exploration and Research Marine Operations, an organization formed to design and consult on manned and robotic sub-sea systems. She holds a depth record for solo diving at 1,000 meters.
