OLD DOMINION GRAD IS BUSH'S PICK FOR CHAIRMANSHIP
Mary Sheila Gall, a graduate of Old Dominion University's master of science in special education program, faces a tough confirmation hearing Thursday, Aug. 2, in her quest to become chairman of the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Gall, who has served on the three-member committee since 1991, was nominated as chair by President George W. Bush. She has come under fire from Democrats for her views opposing tougher standards for the makers of bunk beds, baby bath seats and baby walkers and her support of relaxing standards for fire-resistant fabrics.
The Senate Commerce Committee is scheduled to vote on Gall's nomination today. Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle has indicated that if the committee votes against Gall's nomination, he will not bring it to the floor of the Senate.
