OLD DOMINION A LEADER IN DEGREES BY AFRICAN AMERICANS, SURVEY SAYS

More African-American students at Old Dominion University received master's degrees than at several major universities across the country, according to a survey released by the magazine Black Issues in Higher Education.

For the 1999-2000 academic year, 139 African Americans received Old Dominion master's degrees, according to data released by the U.S. Department of Education and analyzed by the magazine in its July19 issue.

Old Dominion outranked Harvard University, Norfolk State and Ohio State in the survey, in which it ranked 52nd nationally.

Other Old Dominion rankings in the Black Issues' "Top 100" poll included:
� American Indian master's, education -- (tie) 10th;
� African American master's, English language/literature/letters-- (tie) 10th;
� American Indian master's, education -- 24th;
� African American master's, social sciences and history -- (tie) 24th;
� African American master's, engineering -- (tie) 28th;
� Total minority master's -- 29th;
� Total minority doctorates, social sciences and history -- (tie) 37th;
� Total minority master's, English language/literature/letters -- (tie) 30th;
� American Indian master's, all disciplines combined -- (tie) 46th.
