LACROSSE COACH LEADS U.S. TEAM TO WORLD CUP TITLE

The U.S. Women's Lacrosse Team, under the direction of Old Dominion University women's lacrosse coach Sue Stahl, defeated Australia, 14-8, to win the IFWLA World Cup. The competition was held Sunday in High Wycombe, England.

The U.S. has won every championship in which Sue Stahl has been the head coach, making her the first person to win four world titles. The USA has won 12 straight matches in World Cup competition.

The USA squad fell behind, 2-0, in the first five minutes then scored seven of the next nine goals and never looked back. Former Lady Monarch assistant Michelle Uhlfelder scored two goals for Team USA, which reached the finals by beating Germany, 18-0, in the quarterfinals and Canada, 25-2, in the semi-finals.

Stahl coached the USA to World Cup titles in 1989 in Perth, Australia, in 1993 in Edinburgh, Scotland, and in 1997 in Japan. This past collegiate season her Lady Monarch squad ranked 15th nationally.
