AQUATIC PLANTS ARE SUBJECT OF SEMINAR TODAY

Old Dominion University's Department of Biological Sciences will host a seminar on bioremediation with aquatic plants at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, in room 352 of the Mills Godwin Jr. Life Sciences Building.

Bioremediation is the process by which living organisms act to degrade hazardous organic contaminants or transform hazardous inorganic contaminants to environmentally safe levels in soils, subsurface materials, water, sludges and residues.

The seminar will feature Professor Ibtassam Hamad, head of the Department of Sciences at Damascus University in Syria, who will discuss her research on the microbiology of polluted waters in an arid region and the role of aquatic plants in bioremediation.

Hamad and her husband Farouk Fares, who heads the Department of Soils and is an agriculture faculty member at Damascus University, are visiting Fulbright professors at Pennsylvania State University.
