SPORTS HALL OF FAME INDUCTS FIVE

A track and field and cross country record setter, a two-time field hockey All-American, a wrestling All-American, a soccer defensive standout and a relief pitching ace were inducted into the Old Dominion University Sports Hall of Fame.

This year's class includes Wayne Gomes (baseball), Peter Horst (wrestling), Robin Smith (field hockey), George Green (cross country and track and field) and Neil Paynter (soccer).

In 1993, relief specialist Wayne Gomes was the highest Monarch ever selected in the baseball draft when the Philadelphia Phillies tapped him as their fourth overall pick in the first round. As a freshman, Gomes led the Sun Belt Conference with nine saves and earned first-team Freshman All-America honors. He completed his collegiate career with 16 saves, a 5-3 record and 156 strikeouts in 100 innings. Gomes graduated in 1994 with a degree in leisure studies and is currently in his fourth season with the Phillies.

Peter Horst, a 1991-92 co-Alumni Association Male Athlete of the Year, earned wrestling All-America honors in 1991 when he compiled a 33-9-1 record and placed sixth at the NCAA National Championships at 134 pounds. That year, Horst helped lead the Monarch grapplers to a national ranking of 20th. He completed his career at Old Dominion with a 57-14-1 record. Horst is currently an art teacher and wrestling coach at Governor Mifflin High School in Hillington, Pa.

One of the best defensive soccer players ever to compete at Old Dominion, Neil Paynter was Co-CAA Player of the Year and CAA Tournament MVP in 1991. The Bermuda native earned first-team All-CAA and All-South region honors as he helped lead Old Dominion to an 18-2-2 record, its first CAA title and a national ranking of ninth in the final poll. That year, the Monarchs' tough defense allowed only nine goals while scoring 45. After graduating, Paynter was a member of the Bermuda national soccer team. He is currently an elementary school health and physical education teacher in Bermuda.

Robin Smith helped lead Old Dominion to three straight NCAA national championships in the early 1990s and was a three-time NCAA All-Tournament selection. During her four years here, the Lady Monarchs compiled a 98-4-1 record. She scored 21 goals as a senior and was the 1992 CAA Tournament MVP. Smith completed her career with 66 goals and 150 total points. She was a member of the U.S. National field hockey team from 1990-92. Smith graduated in 1993 with a degree in business management. She served as a part-time assistant coach with the Lady Monarchs this past season and currently works for Towne Bank in Portsmouth.

George Green competed from 1961-65 in track and field and cross country. During that period in outdoor track, the team was undefeated. As a senior, Green won three events in the Little Eight Conference championships. He established school records in the half-mile and mile (4:19). In dual competition over four years, Green lost only three times in the 110, 880 and two-mile events. He was a five-time conference cross country champion. Green is a Vietnam veteran and has M.B.A. degrees in both accounting and computer information systems. He is the owner of Green Things and develops Web sites. He is also head track and field coach at Coronado (Calif.) High School.
