NUMEROUS ACTIVITIES PLANNED FOR WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH

Old Dominion University will celebrate Women's History Month in March with a series of activities designed to focus attention on the contributions and achievements of women throughout history.

Unless noted, all events are sponsored by or in conjunction with Old Dominion's Women's Center and are free and open to the public. For more information call 683-4109.

Ongoing events throughout the month include a display of women leaders in North Cafeteria, Webb University Center; a timeline of women's history at the Women's Center, 1000 Webb Center; a window display and related book selection in the University Bookstore, Webb Center; an information table in Webb Center's South Mall; and the exhibit, "Norfolk Women Working for Justice," at Old Dominion's Perry Library (http://www.lib.odu.edu/aboutlib/events/norfolkwomenjustice.htm).

Thursday, March 1 -- Women's History Month Opening Reception: stop by refreshments and a calendar of the month's events; 12:30-1:30 p.m., Portsmouth Room, Webb Center

Thursday, March 1 -- "Women: Bearers of Good News": A dinner and presentation by Anne Gildea of Prince of Peace Catholic Church exploring the role of women in leadership in the Catholic Church today; dinner at 5:30 p.m. (RSVP by 2/28 at 440-9065), presentation follows at 6 p.m., Catholic Campus Ministry House (1306 W. 49th St.). Tuesday, March 13 -- "Women and the Environmental Movement": Experience the energy of women's leadership in the environmental movement from the development of grassroots activism to today's global efforts toward protecting the planet with a presentation by Linda Price King, founder and executive director, Environmental Health Network; 12:30-1:30 p.m., Portsmouth Room, Webb Center. Wednesday, March 14 -- "Women of Prayer: Becoming a Conversation": A faculty/staff breakfast and prayer/reflection with a presentation by Jody Wolford-Tucker, assistant director of Old Dominion's Women's Center; 7:30 a.m. (RSVP by 3/12 at 489-9096), Canterbury Center (1526 W. 49th St.). Wednesday, March 14 -- "The Goddess in the Labyrinth": Join us to walk the labyrinth and discover the path to the eternal feminine through this ancient and wondrous tool with a presentation by Meryl Ann Butler, labyrinth builder since 1992, founding member of The Labyrinth Society and internationally known artist; 2-3:30 p.m., Cape Charles Room, Webb Center. Thursday, March 15 -- "The Impact of Media Images on Women and Girls: The Strength to Resist": This slide/lecture presentation by Gail Dines, associate professor of women's studies and sociology at Wheelock College, will demonstrate how sexist and violent messages in the media about women and girls can have astounding effects on women and girls' self-perception and will address ideas for creating a healthier and egalitarian culture; 12:30-1:30 p.m., Hampton/Newport News Room, Webb Center. Thursday, March 15 -- "Sexy or Sexist? The Impact of Media Images on Women and Girls": Using examples from magazines, television and film, this slide/lecture presentation by Gail Dines, associate professor of women's studies and sociology at Wheelock College, will illustrate how commonplace sexism and violence against women are in the media and how society is becoming desensitized to these messages; 7:30-10 p.m. (a reception follows), Tidewater Community College, Virginia Beach campus, Pungo Theatre. Thursday, March 15 -- Sarah Weddington for the President's Lecture Series: "Some Leaders Are Born Women": At age 26, Weddington was the prevailing attorney in the Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court case legalizing abortion. Throughout her career she has served in several key positions, won numerous awards for writing and speaking, and is currently active in promoting women's leadership development; 8 p.m., 102 Mills Godwin Jr. Life Sciences Building. Friday, March 16 -- "Of Horses and Dream Girls": This slide-lecture presentation by Deborah Bright, professor of photography and art history at Rhode Island School of Design, uses images from old Hollywood films and will feature lesbian/feminist art that exposes gender as a rigid social construct, and challenges historical and popular cultural concepts of femininity, as defined in heterosexist terms; 7-9 p.m., 136 Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center. Monday, March 19 -- Women's Stories Improv-Style: This interactive, improvisational theatre performance by Tidewater Playback Theatre honors the dignity, drama and universality of women's life experiences through "on the spot" enactments of their memories, anecdotes and stories. Audience members volunteer their stories and watch as actors make them come alive through music, movement, sound and short dramas; 7-8:30 p.m., Portsmouth Room, Webb Center. Tuesday, March 20 -- "Mother Universe as Source of all Courage and Vision": Come wonder and marvel at the similarity of shape and design comparing images of "Mother Nature" with glimpses of the universe (as seen from the Hubble Space Telescope) to experience our connection with all of creation as presented by Nancy Healy, co-director of Well Retreat Center; 12:30-1:30 p.m., Hampton/Newport News Room, Webb Center. Wednesday, March 21 -- "Herstory: Nancy Morejon Moves the Afro-Hispanic Woman from Margin to Center": Celebrate the life of this Afro-Cuban woman whose written expression exemplifies the self-defining, self-identifying power of women's literature, as presented by Alicia Phillips, graduate assistant for the Women's Center; 1-2 p.m., Portsmouth Room, Webb Center. Wednesday, March 21 -- Women's Issues Forum on William Holman Hunt's Painting "The Lady of Shalott": A discussion with Linda McGreevy, Old Dominion art professor, on women's issues past and present as they relate to this famous painting; 7-8:30 p.m., Chrysler Museum Galleries. Thursday, March 22 -- "She Speaks, I Listen": In a dramatic performance, Mendel Williams, a woman of African descent and director of Marden's Productions, celebrates her mother's journey from Jamaica to England and her own subsequent journey from England to the United States; 12:30-1:30 p.m., Cape Charles Room, Webb Center. Friday, March 23 -- "Sharing the Vision: Laura Ingalls Wilder and the Writing of the Little House Books": Presentation by Anita Fellman, director of Old Dominion's Women's Studies Program and professor of history, on this historical American woman whose writing has delighted generations; 3-4 p.m., Cape Charles Room, Webb Center.Additional sponsor: Delta Sigma Lambda

Monday, March 26 -- "Women, Science and Objectivity": Is science an objective discipline? What has been the impact of science on women, and how have things changed with the increasing participation of women in science? Roni Kingsley, associate professor of biology at the University of Richmond, will answer these questions and more; 1-2 p.m., Portsmouth Room, Webb Center. Additional sponsor: Psi Chi Honors Society

Tuesday, March 27 -- "Mother Dark and Other Dances": An intriguing dance performance by Second Wind Dance Company and Old Dominion University dance students and faculty illustrating the varied stories of women's lives; 12:30-1:30 p.m., 156 Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center. Wednesday, March 28 -- "Honoring Women's Health": In this "Information Age," this session by Phoebe Butler, health education coordinator, will help women in caring for themselves through learning how to identify and critique books, articles and Web sites that feature women's health information; 2-3 p.m., Cape Charles Room, Webb Center. Wednesday, March 28 -- SAC Movie Night: "Where the Heart Is": Abandoned by her boyfriend, pregnant teenager Novalee Nation stakes out a "home" in an Oklahoma Wal-Mart and finds a host of colorful friends willing to help her. Starring Natalie Portman, Ashley Judd, Stockard Channing and Sally Field; 8-10 p.m., 102 Mills Godwin Jr. Life Sciences Building. Sponsor: Student Activities Council

Thursday, March 29 -- Feminist Activist Fair: Regional organizations serving women and girls will offer our community a glimpse of available resources as well as opportunities for involvement; noon-2 p.m., North Mall, Webb Center. Thursday, March 29 -- Multicultural Book Club - "Turnings: Writing on Women's Transformation": A discussion with the editors of and a contributor to this anthology, which explores the ways in which women deal with transformation publicly and privately. (Book is available in the Old Dominion University Bookstore.); 7 p.m., Hampton/Newport News Room, Webb Center. Moderator: Anita Fellman, director, Women's Studies Program, and associate professor of history, Old Dominion University. Panel: Old Dominion's Luisa Igloria, associate professor of English; Renee Olander, director of interdisciplinary studies; and Nancy Olthoff, director of disability services. Friday, March 30 -- "Play Like a Man. Win Like a Woman": This interactive and informative workshop with Carlane Pittman, Ginger Ambler and Anne Arseneau of the College of William & Mary will involve participants in lively discussion and situational activities that will examine the unwritten rules and roles of the modern workplace (what men may know about success that women need to learn).
