NUMEROUS ACTIVITIES PLANNED FOR WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH
Old Dominion University will celebrate Women's History Month in March with a series of activities designed to focus attention on the contributions and achievements of women throughout history.
Unless noted, all events are sponsored by or in conjunction with Old Dominion's Women's Center and are free and open to the public. For more information call 683-4109.
Ongoing events throughout the month include a display of women leaders in North Cafeteria, Webb University Center; a timeline of women's history at the Women's Center, 1000 Webb Center; a window display and related book selection in the University Bookstore, Webb Center; an information table in Webb Center's South Mall; and the exhibit, "Norfolk Women Working for Justice," at Old Dominion's Perry Library (http://www.lib.odu.edu/aboutlib/events/norfolkwomenjustice.htm).

Thursday, March 1 -- "Women: Bearers of Good News": A dinner and presentation by Anne Gildea of Prince of Peace Catholic Church exploring the role of women in leadership in the Catholic Church today; dinner at 5:30 p.m. (RSVP by 2/28 at 440-9065), presentation follows at 6 p.m., Catholic Campus Ministry House (1306 W. 49th St.). Thursday, March 15 -- "The Impact of Media Images on Women and Girls: The Strength to Resist": This slide/lecture presentation by Gail Dines, associate professor of women's studies and sociology at Wheelock College, will demonstrate how sexist and violent messages in the media about women and girls can have astounding effects on women and girls' self-perception and will address ideas for creating a healthier and egalitarian culture; 12:30-1:30 p.m., Hampton/Newport News Room, Webb Center. Thursday, March 15 -- "Sexy or Sexist? The Impact of Media Images on Women and Girls": Using examples from magazines, television and film, this slide/lecture presentation by Gail Dines, associate professor of women's studies and sociology at Wheelock College, will illustrate how commonplace sexism and violence against women are in the media and how society is becoming desensitized to these messages; 7:30-10 p.m. (a reception follows), Tidewater Community College, Virginia Beach campus, Pungo Theatre. Thursday, March 15 -- Sarah Weddington for the President's Lecture Series: "Some Leaders Are Born Women": At age 26, Weddington was the prevailing attorney in the Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court case legalizing abortion. Throughout her career she has served in several key positions, won numerous awards for writing and speaking, and is currently active in promoting women's leadership development; 8 p.m., 102 Mills Godwin Jr. Life Sciences Building. Friday, March 16 -- "Of Horses and Dream Girls": This slide-lecture presentation by Deborah Bright, professor of photography and art history at Rhode Island School of Design, uses images from old Hollywood films and will feature lesbian/feminist art that exposes gender as a rigid social construct, and challenges historical and popular cultural concepts of femininity, as defined in heterosexist terms; 7-9 p.m., 136 Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center. Monday, March 19 -- Women's Stories Improv-Style: This interactive, improvisational theatre performance by Tidewater Playback Theatre honors the dignity, drama and universality of women's life experiences through "on the spot" enactments of their memories, anecdotes and stories. Audience members volunteer their stories and watch as actors make them come alive through music, movement, sound and short dramas; 7-8:30 p.m., Portsmouth Room, Webb Center.
