PERI LANDS MAJOR AWARD

The Physical Electronics Research Institute (PERI) has been selected to receive a $2 million award from the Multidisciplinary Research Program of the University Research Initiative (MURI).

Sponsored by the Department of Defense, the MURI Awards support basic science and engineering research that will eventually lead to applications for defense and commercial purposes.

Old Dominion's award ($400,000 a year for five years) brings the total external support for pulse power and cold plasma research at the university to nearly $1 million per year (excluding grants in the same areas of research that were independently obtained by two faculty members).

The award will support the research of John Cooper, chemistry and biochemistry; Ravindra Joshi, Karl Schoenbach and Robert Start, electrical and computer engineering; and Mounir Laroussi, Applied Research Center.

The award will strengthen the college's position as a leader in pulsed power and cold plasma research worldwide.
