KAUFMAN PRIZE NOMINATIONS DUE FEB. 28

Nominations will be accepted through Wednesday, Feb. 28, for the annual Kaufman Prize, a $7,500 award to be given to a graduating senior this May.

An award of $2,500 will go to the runner-up.

Created through an endowment from Landmark Communications Inc., the prize is named in honor of the late Charles L. Kaufman, who was a prominent Norfolk attorney and civic leader.

The prize is awarded to a student who has "exerted an exceptional and constructive influence on the university, its students or the community by demonstrating the highest qualities of leadership and service."

Graduating seniors from August 2000, December 2000 and May 2001 are eligible for consideration. Nominees must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and an exceptional record of service to the university or the Hampton Roads community.
In addition to the top two students, up to eight other nominees will be accorded Kaufman Honors, nonmonetary recognition of their achievements. The honored students will be announced at the university Honors and Awards
Banquet in May.

Nominations may be made by a faculty or staff member and should be sent to Maggi Curry-Williams, associate dean of students, in room 2008 of Webb Center.

Nominations of students who meet the basic eligibility requirements and submit the required supporting materials will be reviewed by a screening committee composed of representatives from the academic colleges and the campus community. The committee will then conduct personal interviews and forward recommendations to the president for his review and final
selection.
