WASHINGTON POST SYNDICATED COLUMNIST TO SPEAK AT ECONOMICS CLUB LUNCHEON TODAY

David S. Broder, a political correspondent and columnist for The Washington Post, will speak at the Old Dominion University Economics Club of Hampton Roads luncheon Wednesday, Feb. 14.

Co-sponsored by Old Dominion's College of Business and Public Administration, the luncheon will begin at noon at the Sheraton Waterside Hotel in downtown Norfolk. Due to limited space, reservations are required. The cost of the luncheon is $30 for nonmembers.

A syndicated columnist carried by more than 300 newspapers worldwide, Broder has been named Best Newspaper Political Reporter by Washington Journalism Review and rated as "Washington's most highly regarded columnist" by both editorial-page editors and members of Congress. Additionally, in 1997, Broder was named among the 25 most influential Washington journalists by National Journal. His numerous awards include the National Society of Newspaper Columnists Lifetime Achievement Award, the Fourth Estate Award from the National Press Foundation and the White Burkett Miller Presidential Award.

Broder, who appears regularly on CNN's "Inside Politics" and NBC's "Meet the Press" and "Washington Week in Review," has covered every national campaign and convention since 1960. He is author or co-author of seven books, including "Democracy Derailed: Initiative Campaigns and the Power of Money."

Before joining the Post in 1966, Broder covered politics for The New York Times, The Washington Star and Congressional Quarterly.

Other upcoming speakers for the Old Dominion University Economics Club of Hampton Roads include Geoffrey Colvin, editorial director of Fortune magazine, March 14; Mark Zandi, chief economist and co-founder of Dismal Sciences, April 17; and James V. Koch, president of Old Dominion, May 1.
