OLD DOMINION TO HOST CRAB BOWL FEB. 3
Students from two South Hampton Roads schools � Maury and Catholic high schools � will compete against 14 other schools from across Virginia Feb. 3 in the Blue Crab Bowl, a match-up of the schools' best students to test their knowledge of oceanic science.
Old Dominion University's Department of Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences and Center for Coastal and Physical Oceanography are co-hosts of the Blue Crab Bowl along with the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) and Virginia Sea Grant.
The Blue Crab Bowl will be held at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg and (VIMS) in Gloucester Point. The winning team will travel to Miami to represent Virginia in the National Ocean Sciences Bowl competition against teams from other states.
Teams consist of five students (four competitors and one alternate) and a coach. Multiple-choice or short-answer questions come from the scientific and technical ocean science disciplines -- physics, chemistry, geology, atmospheric science, biology, etc. -- as well as from topics on ocean-related national and international economics, history and culture.
The National Ocean Sciences Bowl is sponsored by the Consortium for Oceanographic Research and Education in partnership with the National Marine Educators Association.
Other schools competing in the Blue Crab Bowl include: Broadwater Academy, Exmore; Alleghany High School, Covington (2); Spotsylvania High School, Spotsylvania; Rustburg High School, Rustburg; Thomas Jefferson High School, Alexandria; Lord Botetourt/James River (2), Daleville; Grafton High School, Grafton; Chesapeake Bay Governor's School; West Springfield High School, Burke; New Horizons Governor's School, Hampton; Patrick Henry High School, Ashland; and Essex High School, Tappahannock.
