CHINESE FILM SERIES BEGINS TODAY
"The Contemporary China," a film series sponsored by the foreign languages and literatures department, opens Monday, Feb. 5, with "The Story of Xing Hua." It will be shown (with subtitles) at 2:15 p.m. in room 345 of the Technology Building.
Directed by Yin Li, this 1995 movie was the official Chinese entry at the Cannes Film Festival. It tells the story of Xing Hua, an obedient Chinese wife who married her husband as she was told to do and endured his cruelty before falling passionately in love with someone else and dreaming of freedom.
With the success of Golden Globe-winner "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," Chinese films are now drawing the attention of mainstream American audiences.
