STUDENT BODY PRESIDENT ELECTED VICE CHAIR OF VSLA

Old Dominion University student body president Michael Arendall Jr., a junior from Chesterfield County, Va., was recently elected as vice chair of the Virginia Student Leader Alliance (VSLA), an organization composed of members of student government associations at colleges and universities throughout the state.

Having served as a member of the Old Dominion Student Senate since fall 1998, Arendall has held numerous positions, including Senate Finance Committee chairman, Constitutional Committee vice chairman and executive vice president. During his term as executive vice president in 1999-2000, Arendall led the efforts of Old Dominion students and other members of the VSLA to gain nonvoting student representation on boards of visitors at Virginia colleges and universities. In recognition of his work, he was elected by fellow senate members as Student Senate Member of the Semester in spring 2000, and Senate Member of the Year in 1999-2000.

In addition to his work for the senate, Arendall serves as first vice chairman of the College Republican Federation of Virginia and as secretary of the Old Dominion chapter of the National Conference for Community and Justice. He is also a member of the university's Honors College.

Arendall, who is majoring in political science with a minor in business administration, plans to attend law school after his graduation from Old Dominion in May 2002. He hopes to pursue a career in corporate law before seeking public office in Virginia.
