WTKR'S BARBARA CIARA WILL BE KEYNOTE SPEAKER FOR SISTERHOOD SYMPOSIUM DEC. 2

Barbara Ciara, managing editor at WTKR NewsChannel 3, will be the keynote speaker at Old Dominion University's second annual Sisterhood Symposium, "Striving for Sisterhood and Excellence: Uplifting the Mind, Body and Soul," from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, in Webb University Center.

The free, one-day symposium is designed to address the needs of black female college students through a series of workshops on career/educational advancement, building positive relationships, sex, health and more. It is sponsored by the Hugo A. Owens African-American Cultural Center, the Sisterhood Symposium Advisory Committee and the Office of Student Services.

Ciara will talk at 2:30 p.m. in the Hampton/Newport News Room in Webb University Center. With more than 20 years' experience as a broadcast journalist, Ciara recently won an Emmy for her series, "Guilty Til Proven Innocent," and honors from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism for her reports on race and ethnicity. She is also the recipient of the 1997 Edward R. Murrow Award from the Radio and Television News Directors Association; a 1997 Emmy nomination for "Operation Haiti" featuring children living in poverty on the island nation; and a 1995 Emmy nomination for the series "Letters from the Hood" a gripping story documenting the lives of children who live in violent urban areas. Ciara has also been honored with numerous Associated Press and United Press International awards dating back to 1986, as well as a dozen prestigious "Excel" awards from the Hampton Roads Black Media Professionals.

Check-in and registration will begin at 8 a.m. in the North Mall in Webb Center. Opening sessions begin at 9 a.m., with workshops immediately following. Students will have the opportunity to network with workshop presenters and members of the Black Alumni Council.
