Christine M. Bacon and Jacob A. Marshall, both of Norfolk, have been selected to represent Old Dominion University in USA Today's All-USA College Academic Team competition.

Their qualifications will be judged against nominees from other schools across the country. Winners will be announced in the newspaper early next year.

She is an undergraduate teaching assistant for the "Introduction to Human Communication" course and a member of the university's advising subcommittee, which was established to assess and improve advising at Old Dominion.

Bacon also serves as a tutor for Bosnian-Croatian refugees through Refugee and Immigration Services in Norfolk.

Marshall, who carries a 3.9 GPA in interdisciplinary studies/aesthetic theory, was inducted into the academic honor society of Phi Theta Kappa International at the age of 16 and was also inducted into the Phi Eta Sigma International Academic Honor Society.

The founder and president of the Old Dominion chapter of Joel 2:28 campus ministry. Marshall has traveled to the Philippines, India and South Africa in the last two years. An accomplished drummer who also plays piano and guitar, he was an exhibitor at international music exchanges in China and Mexico. Marshall is also a certified USA Gymnastics coach.

To be eligible for USA Academic Team consideration, a nominee must be a full-time undergraduate student at an American four-year college or university. Selection to the team is based on grades, awards and activities, leadership and ability to use those academic skills outside the classroom.
