OLD DOMINION STUDENTS TO CELEBRATE KWANZAA DEC. 3

"Y2Kwanzaa," a celebration of the African-American winter holiday, will be from 3-5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, in room 102 of Old Dominion University's Mills Godwin Jr. Life Sciences Building.

Kwanzaa, which means "first fruits of the harvest" in the African language of Kiswahili, traditionally is held from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1 and was founded by Maulana Karenga, a professor at California State University-Long Beach, in 1966. The celebration encourages people to think about their African roots as well as their lives in present-day America.

The event is free and open to the public. Food and prizes, including a $100 gift certificate from an area merchant, will be offered.

The event is co-sponsored by Residence Life, Men About Progress, National Society of Black Engineers, Phi Beta Sigma, Zeta Phi Beta, Johnson and Wales University and the drum group Atumpan.
