MACHANGUANA'S JERSEY TO BE RETIRED FRIDAY NIGHT

The jersey of former Old Dominion University Lady Monarch Clarisse Machanguana (Maputo, Mozambique), a 1997 Kodak All-American, will be retired at a ceremony prior to the Lady Monarchs home opener with Syracuse at 8 p.m. Friday at the fieldhouse.

"We're excited about retiring Clarisse's jersey. This will serve as a tribute to the outstanding academic and athletic career of yet another Lady Monarch," said Lady Monarch head coach Wendy Larry. "Clarisse will now join a very elite company in the ongoing tradition of Lady Monarch basketball."

Machanguana, a two-time CAA Tournament MVP, joins Lady Monarch greats Nancy Lieberman-Cline, Anne Donovan, Inge Nissen and teammate Ticha Penichiero, who have already had their jerseys retired by the university. Machanguana and Penichiero were both Kodak All-Americans in 1997 as they helped lead Old Dominion to a 34-2 record and reach the NCAA championship game.

The 6-5 forward completed her career with 1,813 career points, which ranks her ninth all-time in Lady Monarch history. She shot .624 from the floor and averaged 7.6 rebounds per game in 99 contests.

Since completing her career at Old Dominion, Machanguana played for San Jose in the ABL, followed by two seasons with Los Angeles in the WNBA. She will be with Charlotte this coming season.
