INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED ENGINEERING RESEARCHER AHMED NOOR TO JOIN THE OLD DOMINION FACULTY
Internationally renowned engineering educator and researcher Ahmed K. Noor, director of the Center for Advanced Computational Technology at NASA Langley Research Center, will join the faculty of Old Dominion University's College of Engineering and Technology next month.
Noor will assume his new role as director of the university's newly created Center for Advanced Engineering Environments and professor of aerospace engineering.
"Dr. Noor is the second internationally renowned faculty member to join the College of Engineering and Technology this academic year," said Dean William Swart. "Together with director of simulation programs R. Bowen Loftin, he represents a formidable resource and brings us well along in our objective to become the academic world leader in virtual collaborative environments and modeling and simulation."
Currently, Noor is the Ferman W. Perry Professor of Aerospace Structures and Applied Mechanics at the University of Virginia. His areas of specialization include advanced design and synthesis environments, advanced learning technology, aerospace structures, structural and solid mechanics, computational methods, new computing systems and composite structures.
The Center for Advanced Engineering Environments is the latest of the College of Engineering and Technology's Enterprise Centers which include, among others, the Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center and the Technology Applications Center. As director, Noor will oversee diverse research activities relating to the application of advanced computational technology to create high-tech virtual collaborative engineering environments, and the creation of synthetic environments for the development and maintenance of engineering competencies in a changing world.
In the past decade, Noor has been principal investigator for grants exceeding $7.8 million from NASA, the Office of Naval Research and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, among others.
He is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Academy of Mechanics, American Society of Civil Engineers and American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He is a member of the founding council, fellow and president of the U.S. Association for Computational Mechanics and a member of the founding council of the International Association for Computational Mechanics. In addition, Noor is a founding member of the International Society for Computational Engineering and Sciences and a member of Sigma Xi Honor Society.
A prolific writer, Noor has edited 30 books and authored or co-authored more than 400 archival journal articles, including numerous pieces with NASA Administrator Daniel S. Goldin.
He served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Advances in Engineering Software, associate editor of the Journal of Applied Mechanics and Applied Mechanics Review, and as member of the advisory editorial board of "Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering." Additionally, Noor has served on the editorial boards of more than 10 international journals.
Previously, Noor was professor of engineering and applied science at George Washington University and head of the Structures and Dynamics Group of the Joint Institute for Advancement of Flight Sciences at NASA Langley Research Center. He has also served as senior lecturer at the University of New South Wales in Australia, Baghdad University in Iraq and Cairo University in Egypt.
Noor received a bachelor's degree in structural engineering from Cairo University and a master's and doctorate in structural mechanics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
