VIRGINIA COLLEGE STUDENTS TO DISCUSS AND NEGOTIATE PEACE AT MODEL UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE OCT. 20-21

As the world's eyes turn toward pressing issues of peace, some 80 students from colleges throughout Virginia will gather in Norfolk Oct. 20-21 to simulate the work of two United Nations Security Councils and engage in a historical simulation as part of Old Dominion University's Model United Nations Collegiate Conference.

The two Security Councils will cover such topics as the Kashminr conflict and the conflict in the Democratic Embassy of Congo, as well as review peacekeeping operations. Massood Khan of the Embassy of Pakistan will be on hand to share experiences with the students. The historical simulation will look at the Jammu-Kashmir Conflict of 1947.

These simulations offer an opportunity to discuss and negotiate a wide range of issues facing the global community. Just as the United Nations has moved from confrontation to greater cooperation, the Model UN will focus less on competition and more on working together to solve pressing world problems.
