SUSHIL K. CHATURVEDI RECEIVES ENGINEERING EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR AWARD

Sushil K. Chaturvedi, Virginia Beach resident and chairman of Old Dominion University's mechanical engineering department, recently received the 2000 Pletta Award for the Virginia engineering educator of the year.

Recognizing an engineering educator from one of the six engineering colleges in Virginia each year, the Pletta Award honors Dan H. Pletta who taught mechanical engineering at Virginia Tech from 1932-72. Recipients are selected by a committee made up of members from five state engineering organizations, including the Virginia Society of Professional Engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers (Virginia section), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Consulting Engineers Council of Virginia, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

Chaturvedi's areas of research include heat and mass transfer, solar energy, combustion, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and energy conversion.

Chaturvedi, who has taught at Old Dominion since 1978, received his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in India; his master's in mechanical engineering from the Case Institute of Technology; and doctorate in mechanical engineering from Case Western Reserve University. He currently lives in Virginia Beach with his wife, Kalpana, and their two daughters.
