SMASHING PUMPKINS FOR PHYSICS TODAY AT BAL

The Society of Physics Students will be smashing pumpkins again this year to study a variety of physics concepts from acceleration to momentum to impulse.

The third annual Pumpkin Drop is scheduled for 12:30-1:30 p.m. on Halloween Day, Tuesday, Oct. 31, at the Batten Arts and Letters Building.

Students will drop several pumpkins from the roof of the nine-story structure onto targets designed to catch them nondestructively. Instruments will be set up to record various measurements once the gourds take the plunge.

In conjunction with this year's event, SPS is sponsoring a canned food drive to benefit the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia. Fraternities and sororities will compete to see which group can collect the most food, and those who come to watch the Pumpkin Drop are encouraged to bring cans of food to the site. To add to the festivities, a disc jockey will be on hand to play music for those in attendance.
