GARY SCHAFRAN APPOINTED TO DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY SCIENCE ADVISORY COMMITTEE

Virginia Beach resident Gary Schafran, an associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at Old Dominion University, was recently appointed to the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Environmental Quality Science Advisory Committee.

The newly formed committee, composed of members from Virginia's major universities, will review the science behind state regulations as a way to help maintain and enhance the commonwealth's natural resources.

The Science Advisory Committee's first task, according to DEQ director Dennis Treacy, will be to review the most recent proposals concerning the standards of water quality.

A member of the Old Dominion faculty since 1987, Schafran conducts research in the areas of environmental engineering, water quality, aquatic chemistry and physiochemical treatment processes.

He has received numerous awards and honors, including the 1995 Excellence in Environmental Engineering Award, given by the American Academy of Environmental Engineers, the Best Paper Award in the Water Quality Division at the 63rd Annual Meeting of the Virginia Section of the American Water Works Association and Old Dominion's Excellence in Industry Partnering Award.

A prolific writer, Schafran has written nearly 40 academic articles, more than 30 technical reports, and more than 50 published abstracts and paper presentations.
