FOUNDERS' DAY AWARDS DINNER TO BE BROADCAST ON COX CABLE

Cox Communications will broadcast a taping of Old Dominion University's Founders' Day awards dinner honoring distinguished alumni and area leaders, that was held on Oct. 12. Old Dominion community members who were unable to attend the dinner can catch the ceremony on Cox Cable channel 11 at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, and 1 p.m. Sunday Oct. 22.

The banquet featured guest speaker State Senator J. Randy Forbes, who represents Virginia's 14th District, and included the unveiling of a new university history book, "Old Dominion University: From the Great Depression to the New Millennium, 1930-2000."

Seven Old Dominion University graduates received Distinguished Alumni Awards: Richard G. Ellenberger, '75; David W. Faeder, '78; Nancy Lieberman-Cline, '00; Patrick J. McNeela, '72; Clarence L. Ray Jr., '70; Ernie J. Smith, '79; and Mark A. West, '83.

In addition, five community leaders were honored for their service and leadership throughout Hampton Roads. Thomas J. Johnson Jr., managing partner of Willcox and Savage, received the Albert B. "Buck" Gornto Regional Service Award; Irvine B. Hill, vice president of public affairs and community programming for Cox Communications, received the university's Distinguished Achievement Certificate; Richard T. Cheng, hired by ODU in 1979 to build the computer science program, received the university's Distinguished Entrepreneurial Award; John R. Morrison, president and general manager of WHRO, and Elaine P. Witty, retired after 30 years with Norfolk State University's School of Education where she served as the school's dean for 18 years, received the Town-n-Gown Community Service Awards.
