DWIGHT ALLEN APPEARS WITH BILL COSBY THIS MORNING ON "TODAY" SHOW

Education professor Dwight Allen will appear on NBC's "Today" show Monday, Oct. 16, with entertainer Bill Cosby to promote their book on educational reform.

Allen, eminent professor of educational reform, and Cosby will discuss, "American Schools: The $100 Billion Challenge," with "Today" hosts Katie Couric and Matt Lauer. "Today" airs locally from 7-10 a.m. on WAVY-TV (Ch. 10).

The national television appearance follows a segment with the pair that aired Friday on National Public Radio's "Morning Edition" program. That segment can be heard at http://www.npr.org/programs/morning/cosby.html.

"The attention focused on Old Dominion faculty further highlights the high-profile activities, faculty research and enterprise that is common on campus," said John R. Broderick, vice president for institutional advancement at the university.

Other Old Dominion faculty and events featured in national broadcast media in the past month include:

* C-SPAN's "Book TV" program was on campus to videotape the President's Lecture Series/Literary Festival appearance by acclaimed author Ernest Gaines. An air date has not been announced;

* Donald H. Smith, associate professor of sociology, was interviewed by CNN for a piece about the university's streaming video classes broadcast over the Internet;

* Arnoldo Valle-Levinson, assistant professor of ocean, earth and atmospheric sciences, was a guest on CNN's "Burden of Proof" program and discussed tidal currents in Hampton Roads.
