DERYA JACOBS APPOINTED PRESIDENT OF AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT
Derya Jacobs, associate professor of engineering management at Old Dominion University, was recently appointed president of the American Society for Engineering Management (ASEM), effective Oct. 6.
A member of ASEM since 1987, Jacobs served as the society's conference functional director (1997-99) and secretary (1998) and is a member of the society's board of directors (1997-present). Additionally, she was the general conference chair for the 1997, 1998 and 1999 ASEM national conferences in Virginia Beach. In 1999, Jacobs received the Bernard Sarchet Award, which recognizes individuals who contribute the most, both locally and nationally, to the society.
Jacobs, an Old Dominion faculty member since 1990, has served as the graduate program director for engineering management, interim associate dean of the College of Engineering and Technology, and acting chair of the Department of Engineering Management. Prior to her work at the university, she was a research engineer at Missouri Enterprise in Rolla, Mo., and the Center for Technology Transfer and Economic Development at the University of Missouri at Rolla.
Modeling and simulation, applied artificial intelligence, neural networks and process assessment are among Jacob's research interests. She has worked on projects sponsored by various industry and government agencies including NASA Langley Research Center; Thomas Jefferson National Laboratory; Naval Undersea Warfare Center Detachment; Department of the Army; Joint Training, Analysis and Simulation Center; American Red Cross; and Boardwalk Manufacturing.
In addition to her membership in ASEM, Jacobs is a member of the American Society of Engineering Education, the Institute for Operation Research and the Management Sciences, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and the Institute of Industrial Engineers.
Jacobs received her bachelor's degree in computer science and her master's and doctorate in engineering management from the University of Missouri at Rolla.
