CEO OF SMITHFIELD FOODS TO SPEAK AT ECONOMICS CLUB LUNCHEON OCT. 19

Joseph W. Luter III, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Smithfield Foods Inc., the world's largest hog producer and pork processor, will speak at the Old Dominion University Economics Club of Hampton Roads luncheon Thursday, Oct. 19.

Co-sponsored by Old Dominion's College of Business and Public Administration, the luncheon will begin at noon at the Sheraton Waterside Hotel in downtown Norfolk. Due to limited space, reservations are required. The cost of the luncheon is $30 for nonmembers.

A member of the American Meat Institute's board of directors, Luter has built Smithfield Foods into a Fortune 500 company. Fiscal 1999 sales totaled $3.77 billion. He also serves as chairman of the board for Luter Packing in North Carolina.
Luter received a bachelor's degree in business administration from Wake Forest University, where he serves as a member of the board of trustees.

Other upcoming speakers for the Economics Club of Hampton Roads include Burton G. Malkiel, father of stock market indexing and author of the best-selling "A Random Walk Down Wall Street," Nov. 9; and Bob Tedeschi, New York Times Internet reporter, Dec. 5.
