BERT LONG'S "FIELD OF VISION" OPENS NOV. 11 AT UNIVERSITY GALLERY

Bert Long Jr.'s "Field of Vision", an exhibition of paintings, sculptures and assemblages opens to the public with a reception at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, at the Old Dominion University Gallery, 350 W. 21st St. in Norfolk's historic Ghent.

Long, one of Texas' best-known artists, has been included in more than 100 exhibitions all over the United States and Europe. He won an NEA Artist Fellowship Grant and the prestigious Prix de Rome Fellowship in Fine Art, which is awarded by the American Academy of Rome. His work can be found in the collections of many museums, including New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Dallas Museum of Art and the Houston Museum of Fine Art. Long recently completed a permanent installation as a cultural enrichment project of the 5th Ward Redevelopment Corporation in the long-neglected 3900 block of Lyons Avenue in downtown Houston called "Field of Vision". It will soon be featured on an episode of "This Old House" and in Dwell magazine.

The content of many of the paintings, sculptures and assemblages is autobiographical and frequently incorporates found objects. According to Clint Willour, director and curator for the Galveston Arts Center, "Everything about him speaks to his art � from his very persona to his love of cooking, from carving ice to printing on fabric, from working with children to renovating historic buildings. It is also no fluke that one of the most recurring iconic images in Bert's work is the eye, for it is Bert's eye that is always at work."

The University Gallery exhibition continues through Dec. 3 and is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, noon-3 p.m., Friday and Saturday noon-5 p.m. and Sunday 1-4 p.m. For more information call 683-2355.
