STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE SELECTED FOR SEAT ON BOARD OF VISITORS

James Toscano, a junior communications major from Baldwin, N.Y., was announced Sept. 14 as the Board of Visitors' selection to serve as Old Dominion University's student representative on the board for 2000-01.

The provision for student representation on the boards of the state's colleges and universities resulted from legislative action by the Virginia General Assembly.

In concert with the announcement, the board voted at its Sept. 14 meeting to amend its bylaws regarding student membership. According to the bylaws, "The student shall be a non-voting, advisory member of the board and shall be excluded from any discussion of any recommendation or appeal concerning a specific faculty, staff or administrative member's appointment, salary, promotion or tenure status, or from any executive session at the discretion of the board."

A Dean's List student and member of the Honors College, Toscano has a 3.46 grade point average. He currently works as general manager of Old Dominion's student-run radio station, WODU. His previous university involvement includes writing for the student newspaper, the Mace & Crown, helping staff home basketball games and working in the Office of Admissions.

A three-member selection committee consisting of the vice president for student services, a student appointed by the Student Senate and the director of student activities and leadership forwarded a list of nominees to the board for its consideration.

To be eligible to serve in the position, a student must have successfully completed at least 15 semester hours of course work at the university and possess and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. He or she must be registered for at least six hours per semester during the regular academic year.
