OLD DOMINION THEATRE, PLAY-TIME THEATRE PRESENT 'THE ARKANSAW BEAR' OCT. 20-22

Imagine a little girl in search of an answer to an important question; a dancing bear pursued by a determined ringmaster; a mime to help explain what's going on; a twinkling, wish-granting star; and a hillbilly bear who reluctantly gives up fishing to join in the mayhem. Suddenly, you've got the steps right to dance with "The Arkansaw Bear."

Playtime Theatre for All Ages, in conjunction with Old Dominion University Theatre, will present the children's classic, "The Arkansaw Bear," Oct. 20-22.

Written by Aurand Harris, this country's most prolific writer of theatre for young people, the play combines the talents of Old Dominion students, faculty and guest artists. Harris' other works include "Androcles and the Lion" and "The Brave Little Tailor."

"The Arkansaw Bear" tells the story of a little girl whose grandfather is dying, and her quest to find out "why it must happen." Along the way, she encounters zany circus characters, including a dancing bear, who help explain that loved ones live on in our memories and in the things they have taught us.

The Old Dominion student cast mastered dancing and mime skills to bring these characters to life. Hardin Minor, a renowned North Carolina juggler, mime and teacher, was brought in for several workshops with the students.

Performances of "The Arkansaw Bear," directed by Frankie Little Hardin, founder of Playtime Theatre For All Ages, are scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20; 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21; and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22 in the Stables Theatre. Ticket prices are $3 for children and $4 for adults.
