GUITARIST ANGEL ROMERO TO GIVE RECITAL SEPT. 18

Internationally acclaimed guitarist Angel Romero will give a solo recital at 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 18, at Old Dominion University's Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center.

The performance will be preceded by a master class from 4-6 p.m. Both the concert and master class, to be held in Chandler Recital Hall, are free and open to the public. Seating is limited, however, and will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

Frequently hailed as the Spanish maestro of the guitar, Romero made his professional debut at age 6 and his United States debut at the Hollywood Bowl when he was 16. In 1991, he gave the world premier performance of Joaquin Rodrigo's "Rincones de Espana" with the Little Orchestra Society at New York's Lincoln Center.

During the 1992 concert season he performed in the United Nations General Assembly Hall with the National Orchestra of Spain.

Romero also has a strong interest in the movie industry. In 1994, he composed and directed the musical score for the Gabriele Retes film "Bienvenido - Welcome," for which he won the 1995 ARIEL for music written originally for film.

Romero currently records exclusively for RCA Victor Red Seal and RCA Victor worldwide. His debut on the label was as guest artist with the Canadian Brass on its 1994 holiday release. He can also be heard on four Telarc recordings and 14 Angel/EMI recordings.

The Sept. 18 program at Old Dominion is part of the F. Ludwig Diehn Concert Series partnership with the Virginia Symphony. This series was made possible by a grant from the F. Ludwig Diehn Music Fund of The Norfolk Foundation.
