GERMAN FILM SERIES BEGINS SEPT. 27 WITH 'THE BLUE ANGEL'
"From Berlin to Hollywood: A German Film Series," sponsored by the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at Old Dominion University, begins Wednesday, Sept. 27, with a showing of "The Blue Angel" (1930).
All films, in German with English subtitles, will be shown at 7 p.m. in Batten Arts and Letters Building room 104.

Wednesday, Oct. 11 - "Wings of Desire" (1988) Wim Wenders, dir.
Set in the divided city of Berlin, Wenders' film depicts the angel Damiel, played by Bruno Ganz, who has grown tired and frustrated at his inability to affect people's lives. He decides to leave heaven and enter the mortal world and he crosses paths with, among others, the American actor Peter Falk ("Columbo") who is producing a film in Berlin.
Wednesday, Oct. 25 - "Nosferatu" (1922) Friedrich W. Murnau, dir.
Murnau's eerie telling of the Dracula story was filmed on location in the mountains, towns, and castles of Bavaria. This German Expressionist symphony of horror has served as a model for numerous Hollywood Dracula films.
Wednesday, Nov. 15 - "The Promise" (1995) Margarethe von Trotta, dir.
In this love story the Berlin wall separates two young lovers. They first fall for each other in their teens and their passion stretches over 28 years until the wall no longer presents an obstacle to their joint happiness. This film represents a German epic based upon the Hollywood model.
Wednesday, Nov. 29 - "Run Lola Run" (1998) Tom Tykwer, dir.
This stylish cinematic exercise and art house box-office smash is an exciting, non-stop affair in which the flaming-red-haired Lola is given twenty minutes to get $100,000 to her boyfriend before the mob kills him. The film plays out this scenario three different ways, each building in visceral suspense to a different outcome. Audience Award winner, Sundance Film Festival.
