FLOY OY WONG EXHIBIT OPENS AT UNIVERSITY GALLERY

The Old Dominion University Gallery, 350 W. 21st St., opened the fall 2000 season with an exhibition of mixed-media and installation narratives by internationally acclaimed artists Flo Oy Wong Aug. 26.

Wong will be in residence at the gallery Friday, Sept. 15, to produce a site-specific installation rice drawing in the gallery. She will talk about her work at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, at the gallery followed by a reception.

The exhibition will continue through Sept. 24. Gallery hours are noon to 3 p.m. Monday to Thursday; noon - 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 1-4 p.m. Sunday. Entry to the gallery and the reception is free and open to the public.

Wong's work centers on the personal issues of race and culture in the context of a dominant cultural reality. It explores the effect of this reality on the individual's cultural identity and its consequence for both cultures through the voices of ordinary people.

Included in the exhibition is a number of works from the "Asian Rice Sack series." These works consist of rice sacks embroidered a stitched with colored threads, sequins, beads and lee see. The piece, dense with metaphor, is intended as a tribute to Chinese immigrants and the struggles they encountered in this land of the free.

Wong has coordinated the Women's Caucus for Art U.S. Women's Exhibition at the Fourth International Women's Conference in China, and has won a Kearny Street Workshop /NEA commission. Her rice-sack installation entitled "made in usa: Angel Island Shhh" is on exhibit at the Angel Island Immigration Station in the San Francisco Bay.
