FINAL WEEKEND FOR OLD DOMINION THEATRE'S "ANTIGONE"

Bringing Ancient Greece to life, Old Dominion University Theatre gives its final performances of Sophocles' classic tragedy, "Antigone," Oct. 27-29.

Director Erlene Hendrix, associate professor of theatre arts, will stage "Antigone" as the ancient Greeks may have done it, which promises to make this a memorable production. After extensively researching the tragedy, Hendrix decided to incorporate music based on reconstructions of ancient Greek pieces into the production. The chorus for the play will speak, move and enact words of the text to the beat of the music.

Assisting Hendrix is choreographer Gwen Spear Meng. Meng's work is familiar to Hampton Roads audiences, but "Antigone" will be different from her usual dance choreography. Soldiers hurl imaginary spears and sentries topple from city walls as the chorus relates to the audience the crisis that grips the city of Thebes.

The central thrust of the tragedy, however, will be on the human beings involved. "These characters are not only affected by their laws and customs, but by the will of the their gods. The wishes of the gods are more powerful, and their influence will be evident in this production," said Hendrix.

"Antigone" will run at 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and 2:30 p.m. Sunday. All performances will be at Old Dominion's University Theatre, located in the Technology Building at the corner of 46th Street and Hampton Boulevard.

Ticket prices are $10 general admission; $7.50 groups and non-Old Dominion students; $6 for Old Dominion students with ID. For reservations or more information, call 683-5305.
