PRESTIGIOUS INTERNATIONAL PHYSICS CONFERENCE SPONSORED BY OLD DOMINION CONTINUES TODAY

The "International Symposium on the Industrial Applications of the Mssbauer Effect", a physics and materials science conference, will be Aug. 13-18 at the Double Tree Hotel and Conference Center in Virginia Beach.

The prestigious conference brings together scientists and engineers from academia and industry to disseminate their scientific findings on research topics of industrial importance. This conference is held every four years and this is the first time it will be in the continental United States. It was previously held in Hawaii (1984), Parma, Italy (1988), Seta, Japan (1992) and Johannesburg, South Africa (1996).

The conference is being organized by Desmond Cook and the Condensed Matter and Materials Physics Research Group in the Department of Physics at Old Dominion University.

The Mssbauer Effect, first observed in 1958 by R. L. Mssbauer, is the resonant absorption of gamma rays and analysis of it allows investigation of the magnetic and electric properties of matter with great accuracy.

Presentations will be heard on its applications in chemistry, surfaces and corrosion, materials and industrial processing, magnetics and electronics, and human related topics.

Speakers have been invited from South Africa, France, Japan, Italy, Argentina, Slovakia and Germany.

Old Dominion President James V. Koch will give opening remarks on Aug. 14. On Aug. 16, the participants will tour the Old Dominion campus and the Gornto TELETECHNET Center.
