FIVE FACULTY MEMBERS NAMED UNIVERSITY PROFESSORS

President James V. Koch announced at his State of the University address on Aug. 24 the selection of five faculty members who will carry the title of University Professor for the next four years.

The five join 15 colleagues who were named at this time during the past two years as the first to earn the distinction.

"Regardless of where and how a faculty member teaches, it is in the highest traditions of a university community to recognize and salute those whose teaching is extraordinarily effective," Koch said.

He noted that University Professors are faculty "deemed by their own colleagues and their students as our very best and most effective teachers," adding, "While all faculty engage in a variety of activities during their careers, and especially undertake scholarly productivity in the form of publication, performances and exhibits, nearly all would agree that teaching is the activity that most defines what it is that faculty members do."

University Professors receive a four-year appointment and an annual stipend of $2,500 to support their teaching and related professional activities.

Selected for the award are:
*Janet M. Bing, English
*Kenneth G. Daley, art
*John Hackworth, engineering technology
*Ronald E. Johnson, ocean, earth and atmospheric sciences
*Zia Razzaq, civil and environmental engineering.
