MAJOR EVENTS ANNOUNCED FOR FALL SEMESTER
Old Dominion's fall semester calendar is filling up quickly, and now's the time to start marking your calendar for lectures, concerts, exhibits, plays and other events you won't want to miss. Listed below are selected events that have been scheduled to date (please note that events and activities are subject to change):
*July 22 to Aug. 13 -- University Gallery exhibit, "Contemporary Self-taught Artists: Work from the Ellin and Baron Gordon Collection."
*Aug. 26 to Sept. 24 -- University Gallery exhibit, featuring a portion of visiting artist Flo Oy Wong's "Asian Rice Sack Series," an ongoing body of work in which she has embroidered a collage of shapes on rice saks, using colored threads, sequins, beads and lee see. The pieces are a tribute to Chinese immigrants and the struggles they encountered in the "land of the free."
*Sept. 9 -- India Fest 2000, showcasing Indian handicrafts, arts, dances and food, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Webb Center cafeteria.
*Sept. 18 -- Diehn Concert Series, featuring guitarist Angel Romero, 8 p.m., Chandler Recital Hall, Diehn Center.
*Sept. 21 -- President's Lecture Series, the Raoul Wallenberg Humanitarian Lecture, featuring Oscar Arias, Nobel Prize winner and Costa Rican president, "The Struggle for Peace in the New Millennium," 8 p.m., MGB auditorium.
*Sept. 30 to Oct. 8 -- University Gallery exhibit, featuring a collection of 45 photographs by Paula Allen from the book about the "Disappeared in Chile."
*Oct. 2-5 -- Literary Festival.
*Oct. 5 -- President's Lecture Series, featuring Ernest Gaines, author of "A Lesson Before Dying," 8 p.m., MGB.
*Oct. 13 -- Founders' Day (tentative).
*Oct. 13-15, 19-22 and 26-29 -- University Theatre presents Sophocles' "Antigone," directed by Erlene Hendrix, 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, University Theatre. $
*Oct. 14 to Nov. 4 -- University Gallery exhibit of photographs, featuring the winning entries in the 2000 En Foco Awards Competition.
*Oct. 20 -- Japan Day, featuring performances, lectures and demonstrations, including a tea ceremony, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Chandler Recital Hall.
*Oct. 30 -- Diehn Concert Series, featuring mezzo-soprano Julie Simson, 8 p.m., Chandler Recital Hall.
*Nov. 9 -- President's Lecture Series, featuring conservative legal scholar Dwight G. Duncan and New England School of Law associate professor Richard D. Mohr debating "Who Should Be Allowed to Marry: The Same-Sex Marriage Debate," 8 p.m., MGB.
*Nov. 9-11 -- University Dance Theatre Fall Concert, 8 p.m. Nov. 9-10 and 2 and 8 p.m. Nov. 11, University Theatre. $
*Nov. 11 to Dec. 3 -- University Gallery, featuring the works of Prix de Rome winner Bert Long.
*Nov. 13 -- Diehn Concert Series, featuring Kurt Elling with the John Toomey Trio, 8 p.m., Chandler Recital Hall.
*Nov. 17-19, 28-30 and Dec. 1-3 -- Arthur Schnitzler's "Anatole," directed by Gerald Schwarz, 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Stables Theatre. $
*Nov. 18 -- SACLANT Transatlantic Symposium, "European Union and NATO: Rivals or Partners?"
*Nov. 30 -- Distinguished Presidential Lecture in History, featuring Michael Wood, producer of "In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great," speaking on "The Conquistadors 500 Years On: Perceptions of the Victors and the Vanquished," 8 p.m., MGB auditorium.
*Dec. 1-3 -- Madrigal Banquet, 6:30 p.m., Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center Atrium. $
*Dec. 9-12 and 16-19 -- University Gallery exhibit, featuring the work of seniors in satisfaction of the requirement for the bachelor of fine arts degree.
