HACE ESTABLISHES CHAPTER FOR RETIRED STAFF MEMBERS

Former classified and hourly employees now have a formal means to maintain their ties to Old Dominion University.

A retirees chapter of the Hourly and Classified Employees Association was formed at a meeting on campus June 7. Judy Harrell, who retired last year from the Human Resources Department and who came up with the idea for the organization, was elected president.

The group will work with HRD to establish a Retiree Temp and Part-Time Employment Register, whereby former employees can offer the university experienced workers in times of need.

The chapter will also explore participating in volunteer activities, such as helping disabled students and serving as support personnel at various university functions, including commencement and alumni and development events.

In addition, chapter members will be called on to help out at HACE-sponsored activities, such as the annual "Spirit of the Holidays" party in December for children of employees in grades 3 and below, the Thanksgiving food drive, the HACE Fest picnic and the annual luncheon.

At future meetings, members plan to discuss attending university events as a group, including lectures, concerts and athletic events, and talk about the kinds of information they would like to receive from Old Dominion.

"I'm excited about this chapter," said Harrell, who worked at the university for23 years. "Setting up an employment registry is a way to provide additional income for retired employees, but also a way to provide the university with experienced, temporary help at a moment's notice.

"Just as importantly, though, I think a retirees chapter can be a social group that offers former employees a way to see and talk with old friends," Harrell added.

Other officers elected to the steering committee at the June 7 meeting are:
*Barbara Maloney, vice president for membership (former employee in the community health professions department);
*Claire Ackiss, vice president for programs (current HACE member and an employee in the alumni relations office);
*Billie Fedyszyn, secretary (former full-time employee in the College of Arts and Letters dean's office, and now a part-time employee in international studies);
*Jean Lederle, treasurer (former employee in the College of Engineering and Technology); and
*Jackie Drew, corresponding secretary (current HACE member and an employee in Academic Affairs).

The retirees chapter is scheduled to meet again at noon Tuesday, July 11, in the Richmond Room of Webb Center.

Current employees who know of former colleagues who might be interested in the chapter should contact Harrell at judywilsonharrel@aol.com or call Jackie Drew at 683-5422.
