HOLDEN RECEIVES FULBRIGHT GRANT

Robert Holden, associate professor of Latin American history at Old Dominion University, this summer will begin a six-month study and research stay in Costa Rica in conjunction with a Fulbright grant.

Holden, a faculty members at Old Dominion since 1993, will teach a graduate-level history course at the University of Costa Rica in the capital of San Jose on Cold War security relations in the Americas.

Holden also plans to plumb the country's Cold War security archives for research on a book project, which also deals with security relations of that era between America and Central America.

A visitor to Costa Rica twice before for conferences, Holden will be taking part in his first Fulbright grant at Old Dominion. He had a Fulbright grant to conduct dissertation research in Mexico in the mid-1980s. He'll return to teaching at Old Dominion in Spring 2001.

"I think the Fulbright will be good for Old Dominion because it will strengthen the Latin American studies program at the graduate and undergraduate levels," Holden said.

He will interact with students from across Central America, further strengthening his research project, he said.

Established in 1946 under legislation introduced by the late Sen. J. William Fulbright of Arkansas, the program's purpose is to build mutual understanding between people from the United States and the rest of the world.

Fulbright recipients have included poet Rita Dove, actor John Lithgow and U.S. Sen. Daniel P. Moynihan.
