CHISOX PICK HUMMEL IN SECOND ROUND

Monarchs player Tim Hummel Monday was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the second round of Major League Baseball's Amateur Draft in New York City.

Hummel, a 6-2, 195-pound shortstop, was the 52nd player taken in the draft. He's the highest Monarch draft pick since pitcher Wayne Gomes was selected in the first round by the Philadelphia Phillies in 1993.

Brian Ross, a Monarch teammate and a lefthanded pitcher, also was taken in the 15th round by the Cincinnati Reds with the 453rd pick.

In draft analyses, Rivals.Com projected Hummel would play third base in the majors. "His power is his best tool, and Hummel can reach the fences in all fields," according to the Web site. "Defensively, (he) is smooth in his actions and makes all the routine plays."
