COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING HONORS AREA ADMINISTRATORS FOR SERVICE

Old Dominion University's College of Engineering and Technology presented outstanding service awards to Eugene Newman, technical director for the Joint Training, Analysis and Simulation Center, and Gary Price, head of external affairs at the NASA Langley Research Center, during its annual honors and awards luncheon.

Newman has been a key influence in establishing a strong relationship between the Joint Forces Command and Old Dominion University, said Roland Mielke, professor of electrical and computer engineering.

"His contributions include playing a key role in the development of the Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center, encouraging the university to establish contractual agreements with the Department of Defense, supporting the College of Engineering's efforts to establish a graduate modeling and simulation program, sponsoring student course projects within his organization and promoting common research interests between his staff and Old Dominion faculty members," Mielke said.

Price, who has worked 30 years at NASA Langley Research Center, also was honored for his commitment to Old Dominion University.

"It was his quiet influence within the center management hierarchy that finally resulted in a negotiated memorandum of agreement to allow the College of Engineering to operate the wind tunnel," said Jim Cross, director of the Old Dominion wind tunnel. "He convinced the center director that the successful operation was, indeed, in the best interest of the center, NASA and the national technical communities. The tunnel's success is due mainly to the support and enthusiastic advocacy provided by Gary Price."

Each honoree was presented with a framed commendation and a glass statuette from the College of Engineering and Technology at the May 5 event.
