STUDENT PAPERS EARN HONORS AT CONFERENCE

Eight Old Dominion students collected awards at the conference of Phi Alpha Theta Virginia history honor society chapters held on campus earlier this month.

Students from 10 Virginia colleges and universities presented more than 40 papers. Each paper was critiqued by a panel of judges.

Old Dominion students earned the following honors:
*Graduate United States History Category --
First Place, Matthew Morrison (Hampton), "The Unforeseen Murder of the Honorable George Wythe";
Second Place, Jan Augustine (Suffolk), "'The Middle Cannot Hold': The 1861 Virginia Secession Convention";
Honorable Mention, Donna Gerych (Norfolk), "Mercy Otis Warren and Her Modern Critics."

Honorable Mention, Andrew Hamil (Carrollton, Va.), "The Education of Southern Plantation Women."

*Graduate World History Category --
Second Place tie: Karen Adams (Norfolk), "The Impact of Famine on European Populations During the Wars of Religion" and
