SPRING DANCE CONCERT TO BE HELD FRIDAY AND SATURDAY

The Old Dominion University Dance Theatre presents its annual Spring Dance Concert in April, featuring faculty and student choreography in a program of contemporary work.

Performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. April 14, and 2 and 8 p.m. April 15 at the University Theatre.

Katherine Finney presents "Soukora," a work for nine dancers inspired by gestures used in communication and set to a musical backdrop by Ali Farka Toure and Ry Cooder. Finney combines the rich traditions of Mali, West Africa, and American blues. Through intricate patterns and playful partnering, the dancers bridge their interpersonal space to create a fabric of new performance possibilities.

Marilyn Marloff's "Sundown" is an investigation into the loss and confusion of Alzheimer's sufferers and their families. Set to the enigmatic vocalizations of composer Toby Twining, Marloff's work displays the tension and balance integral to those experiencing this disorder.

Inspired by the baroque basse de viole, visiting assistant professor in dance Kevin Magee has created "Mary Catherine Gallagher," a formal study of comic understatement and baroque sensibility.

Beverly Cordova Duane, director of Second Wind Dance Company, will preview segments of her upcoming evening-length work, "Hymn to the Chesapeake." Duane's excerpts explore the beauty and fierceness of Chesapeake Bay through the poetry of Robert Arthur.

She also presents "Percussive Collage," an exploration of percussion with lively dance phrases and live music composed and performed by Greg Lee.

Student choreographers Cristen Robinson and Tamika Burks will contribute new and original works to complete this celebration of dance.
