FINAL PSEUDOSCIENCE LECTURE IS APRIL 20
Philip A. Ianna, astronomy professor at the University of Virginia, will be the guest speaker during the final College of Sciences Distinguished Lecture Series event at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 20, in the Mills Godwin Jr. Life Sciences Building Auditorium.
Ianna, who is associate director of the Leander McCormick Observatory, also will deliver a speech as part of the physics department colloquium Friday, April 21.
His Thursday lecture, "Astrology? Today?", will explore how astrology arose with the dawn of civilization, was refined in medieval times and is still with us today.
Ianna received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Swarthmore College and his doctoral degree from Ohio State University. A U.Va. professor since 1968, his research focuses on the stars nearest the sun, most of which is conducted in Australia and Chile.
The physics colloquium session, "Nearby Stars and the Search for Planets," will be 3-4 p.m. Friday in Room 200 of the Oceanography/Physics Building.
