2000 FILM AND VIDEO FESTIVAL WRAPS UP FRIDAY

Noted cultural anthropologist Mary Catherine Bateson will discuss "Encountering the Unfamiliar in Art and Social Life" at 7 p.m. Friday, April 14, in Room 102 of the Mills Godwin Jr. Life Sciences Building in conjunction with the third annual Old Dominion University Film and Video Festival, "The Kaleidoscopic Lens: Representing Diversity in Film and Television."

Bateson of George Mason University lectures on topics such as culture, art and her most recent book, "Full Circles: Overlapping Lives: Culture and Generation in Transition." A book signing follows the lecture.

Other events Friday include:

10 a.m. "Common Ground" -- National leaders of diverse faiths explore the role of religion and religious institutions in race relations. A collaboration of WHRO and the National Conference for Community and Justice as part of the "Colors All Our Own" outreach initiative (60 min.). Commentator: Dr. Lawrence Forman, Ohef Sholom Temple. Location: Webb University Center Potomac River Room.

1 p.m. Youth Entertainment Studios introduces the work they do locally and shows films done by local youth. Commentator: Harry Young, Director of YES (75 min.). Location: Webb University Center Potomac River Room.

3:15 p.m. Old Dominion University Student Short Films -- Konrad Winters presents short films made by his students (120 min.). The student filmmakers will be present to answer questions. Commentator: Konrad Winters, Old Dominion University. Location: Webb University Center, Potomac River Room.
