ART EXHIBIT ON DISPLAY THROUGH APRIL 16

There's not much time left to catch "Divine Humility: Jesus Icons in Contemporary Mexico," the current exhibition at the University Gallery. The works, a collection of 60 color photographs by Robert Lewis of Memphis, Tenn., will be on display through Sunday, April 16.

Lewis will be in town on the final day of the show to lead a panel discussion at the gallery, beginning at 1 p.m. Joining him will be Old Dominion faculty Elizabeth Lipsmeyer (art) and Robert Holden (history), along with contemporary artist Federico Correa.

Gallery hours are noon to 3 p.m. Monday to Thursday; noon to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 1-4 p.m. Sunday. The gallery is located at 350 W. 21st St. in Norfolk.

Photographing in Mexico 15 years ago, Lewis began to focus on the omnipresent Jesus icons and the integration of Christ and death in everyday life. Mexico's monolithic identity and cultural cohesion continues to provide a deeply rooted and sensually rich visual culture.

"Photography has given me a direct interactive means to express the excitement of my discovery of Jesus icons, while providing an opportunity for a density of meaning that can be shared with others.

"I want my photographs to have an immediate 'hey look here' come-on, yet provide layers of meaning that provokes a longer look and a shared understanding."

The photos in the exhibit were taken "out of the flow of time" in a transformative Mexican culture. They were intended to preserve a view of the exuberance and sensitivity within Mexican spiritual life in the late 20th century.
