"PROMISING PRACTICES IN WORKING WITH TROUBLED YOUTH" CONFERENCE TO BE HELD MARCH 22

Old Dominion University's Darden College of Education and the Hampton Roads Public Service Education Agency will present a working conference, "Promising Practices in Working with Troubled Youth," Wednesday, March 22, in the Chesapeake/Norfolk Room of Webb University Center.

The daylong workshop, which is free and open to school administrators, counselors, principals and school security personnel, will feature an open discussion to generate strategies in family-school linkages. This conference is the second in a three- part series.

Denyse B. Dorries, chair of the York County Schools psychology department, will deliver the keynote address. Her presentation, "Creating Partnerships Between Schools and Families: A Collaborative Approach," will describe a competency-based approach to creating positive home-school partnerships, parenting skills and family strategies to enhance a child's education.

For the past 10 years, Dorries, a licensed school psychologist specializing in family counseling, clinical supervision and psycho-educational assessment, has been developing an innovative program using structural family therapy and systems intervention to foster collaborative partnerships with parents and professionals in the York County Schools.

In addition to the keynote address, the workshop will feature two panel discussions on family-school linkages and responding to violence, anger and disruptive behavior.

The workshop will include a free lunch. Due to limited space, reservations are required. For more information or to register, call 683-3225.
