ELAINE JUSTICE SELECTED AS INTERIM DEAN FOR COLLEGE OF SCIENCES

Provost Jo Ann Gora announced Wednesday that Elaine M. Justice, chair and associate professor of psychology, has agreed to serve as interim dean of the College of Sciences. She will take over the duties of Terry Hickey, who is stepping down May 1 to become senior vice president and provost at the University of Akron.

In a letter to the faculty and staff in the College of Sciences, Gora said, "I have found Elaine to be thoughtful, fair and well grounded in the college's issues and believe she is the ideal candidate for the position of interim dean. She will serve as interim dean until the position is filled."

Gora reported that more than 40 applications for the dean's position have been received and that applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

The search committee, chaired by Michael Dingerson, associate vice president for research and graduate studies, plans to conduct second interviews with three to five final candidates between May 15 and June 2, she added.

"I hope the search will result in the selection of a dean who can begin in September 2000," Gora said.

Justice joined the Old Dominion faculty in 1978 as a lecturer in psychology. She was named an associate professor in 1985 and became department chair of psychology in 1994. She is currently completing her second term as chair. Justice holds a doctorate in developmental psychology from the University of Cincinnati. She earned master's and bachelor's degrees in psychology from, respectively, Marshall University and Northern Kentucky University.
